چکیده
The mixed state of type II superconductors has magnetic flux penetrating the sample in the form of vortices, with each vortex carrying an identical quantum of flux. These vortices generally form a triangular lattice under weak mutually repulsive forces; the lattice spacing can be easily varied over many orders of magnitude by varying the external magnetic field. The elastic moduli of this lattice are small and this soft vortex matter can undergo phase transitions like normal matter, but with thermal fluctuations and underlying defects playing an important role. We discuss experimental studies on vortex matter phase transitions, with some emphasis on DC magnetisation measurements investigating the nature of the phase transition. Keywords: vortex matter; phase transitions.

Structural phase transitions of vortex matter in an optical lattice.
We consider the vortex structure of a rapidly rotating trapped atomic Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of a corotating periodic optical lattice potential. We observe a rich variety of structural phases which reflect the interplay of the vortex-vortex and vortex-lattice interactions. The lattice structure is very sensitive to the ratio of vortices to pinning sites and we observe structur...
متن کاملPhase transitions and vortex-line entanglement in a model high-temperature superconductor.
We carry out Monte Carlo simulations of the uniformly frustrated three dimensional XY model, as a model for vortex line fluctuations in high temperature superconductors in an applied magnetic field. We show, comparing systems of different size, that there are two distinct phase transitions. At a lower Tc⊥, the vortex lattice melts, and coherence is lost in planes perpendicular to the magnetic f...
متن کاملQuantum Phase Transitions Beyond the Landau-Ginzburg Paradigm and Supersymmetry
We make connections between studies in the condensed matter literature on quantum phase transitions in square lattice antiferromagnets, and results in the particle theory literature on abelian supersymmetric gauge theories in 2+1 dimensions. In particular, we point out that supersymmetric U(1) gauge theories (with particle content similar, but not identical, to those of theories of doped antife...

Large-scale simulations on the three-dimensional (3D) frustrated anisotropic XY model have been performed to study the nonequilibrium phase transitions of vortex matter in weak random pinning potential in layered superconductors. The first-order phase transition from the moving Bragg glass to the moving smectic is clarified, based on thermodynamic quantities. A washboard noise is observed in th...
متن کاملMetastabilities across disorder-broadened first-order transitions
We discuss first-order phase transitions that are broadened by disorder, but still remain first order on the local mesoscopic level. Using vortex-matter as our paradigm, we argue that phase transitions in general can be broadened by two different causes viz. due to a distribution of the phase transition point (field or temperature) from one region of the sample to another, or due to a distribut...
